Finally understand why your child reacts the way they do
You ask if the shoes can go on. Ten minutes later one child is negotiating, the other is crying, and you are raising your voice. Again. What works for one child backfires with the other.
This is not a parenting problem. Your child’s behavior is telling you something. Characters in Color – Workbook for Parents teaches you how to read it.
Four colors you’ll recognize at the kitchen table
This workbook translates two established insights, DISC and polyvagal theory, into four color profiles:
- Red: takes the lead, wants to choose, gets things done.
- Yellow: social, lively, looks for fun and attention.
- Green: loyal, sensitive, looks for calm and connection.
- Blue: thinks first, asks lots of questions, thrives on structure.
Every child is a mix of all four. The workbook doesn’t put your child in a box. It gives you a new way of looking.
What you’ll get out of it
- You spot the pattern sooner and see stress building before the meltdown.
- You know what your child needs from you when they are angry, scared or withdrawn.
- You say things in a way that lands, so a simple request doesn’t turn into a power struggle.
- You understand why siblings need different things.
- You see how your own color clicks or clashes with your child’s.
- You share words for feelings that your child understands too.
What’s inside
- A clear explanation of the four colors, in everyday language
- The kid-friendly color quiz: 24 questions to do together, with tick boxes and a score form
- Familiar everyday situations: mornings, homework, arguments, bedtime

- Writing space throughout to capture your own insights, all fillable
“I wrote this workbook for parents like you. Not to change your child, but to get to know them a little better.”
Artilla van den Boogaart-Thissen, therapist and founder of Characters in Color
Frequently asked questions
Am I labeling my child?
No. Colors describe preferences and needs, not a fixed identity. Every child has all four.
Do I need any background knowledge?
No. Everything is explained from scratch.
Do I do the exercises alone or with my child?
Both. You do the color quiz and the family challenge together; the reflection pages are for you.
Does it work with more than one child?
Yes. Parents of very different children get a lot out of it.
Is this a diagnosis?
No. There is no test with a “right answer”. It is a compass for understanding and talking about behavior, and it does not replace professional help.
